$20K Reward For Macklin Hay Bale Fires Information
A series of suspected arsons targeting hay bales, grass, and crops around a west-central Saskatchewan town has left the community both frustrated and baffled, according to the local fire chief. The situation has escalated to the point where a $20,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
Fire crews have responded to more than 20 fires in the past month—a number they typically handle in an entire year. The incidents began on July 29, with crews extinguishing hay bales set ablaze in a ditch. Fires continued in ditches throughout that day, extending into the evening and early morning.
Two days later, the department urged farmers to collect and secure their hay bales at home, but the arsons persisted in the following weeks.
Initially, the board overseeing the fire department offered a $3,000 reward, which has since been increased to $20,000.
Macklin, the town affected, is located 250 kilometers west of Saskatoon, near the Alberta border.
