Sulphur Dioxide Plume Crossed Over the UK

The Met Office is closely monitoring a sulphur dioxide plume that has passed over the UK today, sparking concerns it could cause health issues.

Cities such as London, Norwich, and Hull are among those affected by the CO2 cloud, which originated from an Icelandic volcano.

While this colorless gas can cause symptoms like a sore throat, coughing, and difficulty breathing, the Met Office has issued a reassuring update.

The gas is “high in the atmosphere” and is expected to have “little impact on ground-level air quality,” according to the Met Office.

“We’re continuing to monitor any sulphur dioxide release from Iceland, with current forecasts indicating minimal impact on UK surface air pollution in the coming days,” the statement added.

Sulphur dioxide is commonly produced by burning coal or crude oil but can also occur naturally following a volcanic eruption.
