Who am I ?
Gentle John Henry was born in Griffin, Georgia, the son of a Confederate Army major. As a boy, he was taught proper bearing and courtly manners but one thing he could not do was hold his own in a fight, which disturbed his father deeply. Young John didn’t like physical violence to the point where he was enrolled in the Baltimore Dental College.
He studied hard for 2 years and completed the course in dentistry. Then he moved to Atlanta to start his postgraduate practice. He did very well and frequently took over his elder colleagues practice. Twenty-two year old John decided to move back home and establish his practice there but another set back awaited him. His health had diminished due to a diagnosis of Tuberculosis. He needed to find a warmer and drier climate to live. His Dr. gave him a year or two at most to live.
So, he packed up and headed out West. A stopover in Dallas was his turning point in life. His first cowboy patient complained about his treatment and in the ensuing argument, the dentist pulled out a .45 and blew away the cowboy!!
John Henry lived for 14 more years with his ailment. His good friend Wyatt Earp once described him as “the nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever saw”. Perhaps by now you’ve guessed who John Henry is. The little boy who couldn’t hold his own in a fight… the mild mannered dentist who found life after facing a health death sentence… the much-feared, drinking, gambling, gun-slinging friend of Wyatt Earp… was John Henry “Doc” Holliday!!
