Trevor Herriot is an acclaimed writer and naturalist based in Regina, Saskatchewan. His work has been featured in the Globe and Mail, Canadian Geographic, and several anthologies. He’s written two documentaries for CBC Ideas and is a regular guest on CBC Radio Saskatchewan’s Blue Sky where he speaks about nature and environmental issues.
Herriot’s work has been nominated for a Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction, short-listed for a Writer’s Trust Non-Fiction Prize, and won several other national awards. He’s written six non-fiction books about human and natural history on the northern Great Plains. His third book, Grass, Sky, Song: Promise and Peril in the World of Grassland Birds (Harper-Collins, 2009) was recognized by Quill and Quire on its 2009 “List of 15 Books that Matter” and listed as one of the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 Books. In 2017, Herriot received the Cheryl and Henry Kloppenburg Award for Literary Excellence for his body of acclaimed work.
Mr. Herriot has moved into the world of fiction with his latest work, a novel, The Economy of Sparrows (Thistledown Press, 2023). Nell Rowan, birder and researcher, retires and returns to her family’s Saskatchewan homestead. She struggles to reconcile Century Farm status with settler privilege and manage her frustration regarding societal apathy toward maintaining habitat for birds and insects. “No trees, grass, wetlands, just the uniform green of canola.”
Write Out Loud is pleased to acknowledge sponsorship for Trevor Herriot’s presentation by the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild. Appreciation also goes to the City of Swift Current for their support.
Write Out Loud commences September 25 at the Swift Current Lyric Theatre. Admission is $8. Doors open at 6:30. Classical guitarist and Great Plains College Principal, Brad Mahon, will entertain at 7:00, and Mr. Herriot’s presentation will follow.
