Significant Rainfall Coming

Southwest Saskatchewan is bracing for a significant rainfall as a low-pressure system over Montana moves into the province by Tuesday afternoon. Most areas in the storm’s path are expected to experience rain by the evening.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) reports that areas like Maple Creek, Swift Current, Leader, and Kindersley can expect 40 to 70 millimetres of rain, while Saskatoon will also see substantial rainfall. Some localized thunderstorms may push totals in certain spots to over 90 or even 100 millimetres.

“This is going to be a rare event,” said Stephen Berg, meteorologist with ECCC. “It’s shaping up to be severe in some areas, with the possibility of localized flooding, particularly in regions with hard ground or urban areas where overland flooding could be a concern.”

Berg also warned of hydroplaning risks from surface water on the roads and advised against driving in affected areas due to the high likelihood of vehicles sliding off roads. Reduced visibility, potentially down to half a mile, could further complicate travel.

Farmers may also face challenges as they continue their harvest, Berg said. “With crops still in the ground, the rain could make it difficult for them to proceed.”

While Regina might avoid the worst of the storm, the city could still see between 10 and 25 millimetres of rain. Thunderstorms may increase that total, according to Berg.

The storm is expected to last from Tuesday to Thursday before moving toward the northeast corner of Saskatchewan on Friday.
