SaskPower has reinstated a 60% reduction in the federal carbon tax for customers whose primary home heating source is electricity. Running from Nov. 1, 2024, to April 30, 2025, this initiative could save customers up to $21 per month, depending on winter weather and electricity usage.
The program, which ran earlier this year from January to April, provided $1.3 million in relief. SaskPower has identified most qualifying customers, but those not yet recognized are urged to contact them via their MySaskPower account.
The Saskatchewan Party recently announced plans to extend this relief and pledged to waive the carbon tax on natural gas until late 2025. Earlier this year, Saskatchewan ceased collecting the carbon tax on natural gas in protest of what Premier Scott Moe called an “unfair” exemption for heating oil benefiting Atlantic Canada.
Following this, the CRA issued a $28 million collection notice. Saskatchewan responded with a legal challenge, securing a temporary injunction from the Federal Court on July 5. Negotiations continue as the province maintains a line of credit while arguing a broader constitutional case in federal tax court.
