Harvest Grain Ltd. Expands with Key Acquisitions in Saskatchewan’s Specialty Crop Industry
A trio of investors is consolidating several crop-handling facilities in Saskatchewan to create a new pulse and specialty crop company.
Harvest Grain Ltd., which owns the canaryseed processor Bornhorst Seeds Ltd. in St. Gregor, northeast Saskatchewan, has announced the acquisition of full ownership of Harvest Milling, a specialty crop handler in Fillmore, in the province’s southeast. This deal involved buying out the 50% share previously held by KF Homestead Properties Inc., led by Lionel Kambeitz.
Additionally, Harvest Grain has purchased the former Global Food and Ingredients (GFI) specialty crop facility in Zealandia, located in west-central Saskatchewan. GFI, which acquired the Zealandia plant from Canpulse in 2019, entered receivership earlier this year, following Canpulse’s receivership in 2020.
According to a company release, Harvest Grain will be led by David Nobbs, a farmer and seasoned specialty crop expert. The other shareholders include Terry Arnold, a farmer and facility manager, and Rajesh Jain, a veteran in specialty crop trading.
“There has been significant upheaval among pulse and specialty crop trading companies in recent years,” said Nobbs. “Harvest Grain Ltd. is committed to this business for the long term and looks forward to earning farmers’ trust and business.”
In the short term, Harvest Grain will operate transactions with farmers through Bornhorst Seeds, gradually transitioning to the Harvest Grain name. Bornhorst is licensed and bonded with the Canadian Grain Commission and operates a primary elevator with a 3,000-tonne capacity, serviced by CN Rail.
Financial details of the acquisitions have not been disclosed.
