Genesis Fertilizers has achieved a major milestone in its plan to build Canada’s first low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer facility. The company has signed a front-end engineering design (FEED) agreement with DL Engineering and Construction (DL E&C), a South Korean firm specializing in fertilizer plant construction. The signing, hosted at the Canadian Embassy in Korea, underscores the strong collaboration between the two nations.
FEED involves developing detailed plans for the facility, focusing on technology integration, carbon capture, and material flow. This phase ensures the plant is designed to be safe, efficient, and cost-effective—critical steps toward successful construction and operation.
For Western Canadian farmers, this project promises a more reliable and affordable supply of nitrogen fertilizer. Currently, many rely on imported products, vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply chain challenges. A locally produced source could reduce dependence on external markets and provide greater stability.
Sustainability is at the heart of this initiative. The proposed facility aims to use advanced carbon capture technology to sequester up to 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually, supporting farmers in meeting environmental goals.
With FEED set to begin in December, Genesis Fertilizers is moving closer to its vision. Construction is expected to start after this phase, with operations projected to begin by 2029.
This project goes beyond producing fertilizer—it’s about empowering farmers. By establishing a farmer-owned facility, Genesis Fertilizers aims to return profits to the farming community while ensuring a stable, locally sourced supply of nitrogen fertilizer.
