SaskPower Bills to Rise 2.9% in January Due to Federal Carbon Tax Increase
SaskPower has announced that customers can expect an average bill increase of 2.9 per cent in January, driven by a rise in the federal carbon tax.
The Crown corporation explained that the federal carbon tax rate rider, applied to customer bills, is updated annually to account for scheduled carbon levy increases and changes to emissions thresholds, particularly for coal-based power generation.
“The amount charged per customer will vary depending on their consumption and rate class,” SaskPower stated.
For the average residential customer, the hike will add about $26 in 2025, bringing the total annual carbon tax charge to approximately $107. Farm customers, however, will feel a bigger impact, with an average increase of $75 annually, raising their total yearly cost to $314.
The federal carbon tax is set to rise by $15 per tonne each year until 2030.
