Alberta Signs Oil and Gas Agreement with Enbridge

The Alberta government has entered into an agreement with Enbridge aimed at boosting exports of the province’s heavy oil to the United States, Premier Danielle Smith announced.

The deal creates a working group to explore future opportunities for transportation, storage, and market access within Enbridge’s extensive pipeline network.

Smith highlighted that the partnership aligns with Enbridge’s infrastructure goals, supporting Alberta’s long-term vision for energy expansion.

She shared that this collaboration enhances cross-border transport solutions, fitting with Enbridge’s plans to improve its current systems. She also explained how this positions Alberta to contribute significantly to U.S. energy security and affordability.

The agreement includes measures to reduce regulatory hurdles, streamlining permitting and approval processes.

Greg Ebel, president and CEO of Enbridge Inc., shared the company’s readiness to scale up capacity as demand increases, explaining that Enbridge is well-positioned to collaborate with producers and governments to deliver scalable, cost-effective solutions that enhance North American energy security and affordability.

Smith reiterated her ambition to double Alberta’s oil and gas production, noting ongoing talks with other pipeline companies.

The premier also outlined plans for regular trips to the United States throughout the year to promote Alberta’s energy resources, beginning with a visit to Washington, D.C., for President Donald Trump’s inauguration, followed by stops in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.

Trump has proposed a 25 per cent tariff on imports but suggested countries buying American-produced oil and gas may avoid the fees. Smith framed Alberta as a key partner in filling the gap between U.S. production and consumption.

Smith described the Enbridge deal as the first of many agreements designed to unlock investment returns for Albertans and enhance market access.
