It’s 2025. A new year always gets me excited – because why not? Feels like a clean slate. Are the resolutions and goals necessary? Maybe. Maybe not. Some years I’m into it and some not so much. I do however, love to do a recap and reflect. That always is worthwhile. I’ll do you a favour and refrain from listfully gloating about what I accomplished in 2024 – but I do feel that we all have highlights that we should be proud of. Maybe most were small victories, but often those mean big things. That’s what I’m discovering is how big change happens – through small, consistent moves that keep you on a path.
One of my goals for 2024 was to write more. Thanks to this column and the wonderful team at Kindersley Social I was able to do just that. I also wrote my first piece on Substack back in November which felt like a huge milestone for me. These goals might seem minor to some, but it’s the small, seemingly trivial things that help lead us to our biggest dreams. Where will writing take me? I’m not certain but I have some dreamy ideas in the making.
As far as goals and resolutions go…I like to think that during the colder months it is equally important to prioritize the slow, cozy retreat that is winter. In Katherine May’s, Wintering, she highlights that we truly have no idea how to winter. We treat it like every other season and try to power through the inward pull of resting and retreating in the cold, bleak months. To Katherine, “Doing these deeply unfashionable things – slowing down, letting your spare time expand, getting enough sleep, resting – are radical acts these days, but they are essential.” She continues that she is burrowing into a hygglig life, “a Danish term that represents cosiness as a kind of mindful practice, turning towards homely comfort to console us against the harshness of the world outside.”
I hope you light up some candles and make space for the cozy socks, fluffy blanket and a cup of tea to enjoy a bit of the hyggelig life yourself. Your dreams will be that much sweeter if you show up with some energy left. Some say rest is equally as important as the striving. I believe them to be true.
All the best in 2025.
