Politics! Everyone’s Favorite Topic!
Politics—everyone’s favorite dinner table conversation, right? On the latest episode of The Kev and Rev Show, the duo tackled a listener’s question: Why don’t they talk about politics? Turns out, the answer is simple—they still want to be friends.
Kevin and Piotr agree that politics is the great divider, and in today’s world, it’s hard to know what to believe. Piotr, who has lived in Canada for over 31 years and experienced various governments, describes his political stance as “cynical.”
Kevin suspects he’s not alone. “That would refer to probably 85% of people,” he said.
The pair reflected on the way politicians speak, how the more they say, the less they seem to actually say. Piotr even referenced a line from The Hunt for Red October: “I’m a politician, which means when I’m not kissing babies, I’m stealing their lollipops.” Kevin chuckled at that one.
Despite the divisiveness of political discourse, Piotr wishes people could have open conversations without fear of judgment. “Why can’t we sit down over a cup of coffee, a beer, or a glass of milk and just talk?” he asked. “Not to convince each other, but to understand each other.”
Kevin wholeheartedly agreed, adding, “And it’s okay to disagree. We can still be friends.”
The conversation then turned to social media, where political discussions can quickly spiral into arguments. Piotr shared that people are often afraid to express their views, worried about backlash or conflict. He compared it to his experience as a clergyman—when people find out his profession mid-conversation, they suddenly start apologizing, unsure of how to proceed.
The two wrapped up their discussion with the realization that society has become more closed-off, hesitant to engage in meaningful discussions about differing viewpoints. But they’re hopeful that conversations like these can help bridge the gap.
