Darryl Seguin will be the New Sun West Director of Education
Sun West School Division Board of Education announced today that Darryl Seguin, currently Superintendent/CEO of the Livingstone Range School Division in Alberta, will be the next Sun West Director of Education, beginning August 1, 2025.
Prior to the Christmas break, the Board began an extensive search for a new Director of Education, before deciding on Seguin in February. “We were pleased to have a strong field of candidates who were interested in Sun West,” stated Michele Whitfield, Chair of the Sun West Board of Education. “We are even more pleased that Darryl has accepted our invitation to lead Sun West. His combination of experience, team-building skills, and dedication to young people will continue to move Sun West in a positive direction,” she added.
Seguin has been Superintendent/CEO of Livingstone Range since 2017. Prior to that, he enjoyed a highly successful career as a senior administrator, principal and teacher with Livingstone Range and several other school divisions in Alberta. He has 27 years of leadership experience, including 13 years at the school division level, and 14 years as a school-based administrator.
Recognizing that each person possesses unique strengths and abilities, Seguin enjoys creating engaging and innovative programs and opportunities to enhance student and staff success. He has a passion for lifelong learning and leadership development. In addition to meeting the Superintendent Leadership Quality Standard, Seguin has experience teaching the Leadership Quality Standard certification course for principals in Alberta and facilitating a number of FranklinCovey leadership training courses.
“I am excited to join the Sun West Trustees, staff, parents, families and communities as we work together to prioritize student learning and engagement and ensure Sun West students feel safe and cared for. I have worked with Livingstone Range School Division for the past 20 years and although I am leaving behind a piece of my heart in Southern Alberta, I look forward to new friendships, opportunities and adventures with the Sun West community. I am intrigued by Sun West’s innovative, collaborative and student-leadership focus. These are aspects that align well with my beliefs about education,” explains Seguin. “Working together, I believe the parents, staff and community members of the Sun West School Division will find great joy as we watch our students achieve success in their educational journeys.”

Darryl Seguin: A Dedicated Educator and Leader
August 1, 2025, current Superintendent/CEO of the Livingstone Range School Division in Alberta, Darryl Seguin will begin a new adventure as Sun West Director of Education.
His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Lethbridge (U of L), where he graduated with distinction in 1993 with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Social Studies. He completed his Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration degree at the U of L in 2003 and obtained a Human Resource Management Certificate from the University of Calgary in 2017.
Throughout his career Seguin has taken a student-centered approach. He has a strong belief in student engagement and leadership, and a passion for seeing students work toward success and achieve their potential. His first teaching position was in Northern Alberta with the Little Red River Board of Education in Garden River, Wood Buffalo National Park. His first-year assignment was with grades 6-9. During his second year in Garden River, Seguin’s position changed, and he found himself teaching grade three students and taking on the role of co-principal. During those two years, he spent many hours at the school playing community volleyball and outdoor hockey (at -35 degrees), coaching a variety of student sports and learning about the Indigenous traditional way of life from his students and community members.
“My first teaching experience taught me a lot about how students thrive when teachers are caring, take the time to personalize learning, and involve the community to support kids,” says Seguin.
He spent the following year teaching at Tatsikiisaapo’p Middle School under the Kainai Board of Education before joining Wolf Creek School Division in 1996, where he taught at Rimbey Jr./Sr. High School and served as the school’s Athletic Director. He returned to school administration in 1999 as Assistant Principal and then Principal at Crestomere School (K-9). In his new role in administration, Seguin worked hard with staff to improve student satisfaction and academic performance. In Spring 2005, Mr. Seguin was nominated for an Excellence in Teaching Award in Alberta for his outstanding contributions to education.
In September 2005, Seguin had the opportunity to move to Livingstone Range School Division to lead G.R. Davis Elementary school, a designated priority school due to its history of low academic achievement. Success there led to administrative positions at Willow Creek Composite High School and Outreach North School where he continued to demonstrate school improvement.
Seguin transitioned to Division-level administration in 2012, serving as Associate Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent, before taking on his current role as Superintendent/CEO of the Livingstone Range School Division in 2017.
