Saskatoon has been experienccing numerous bear spray-related incidents. The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has responded to multiple cases involving assaults, robberies, and disturbances where bear spray was used as a weapon.
Transit Attacks: Public transportation has become a frequent target. In March, Police responded to the area of 20th Street and Avenue B South after reports that a bus driver was a victim of a bear spray attack. Further investigation located the suspects a short distance away. A 15-year-old female was found in possession of a can of bear spray and attempted to resist arrest. Similar incidents occurred in February, including a case where a group of youth attacked a bus passenger before fleeing.
Business-Related Crimes: Several businesses have also been targeted. In February, bear spray was used in two separate attacks—one at an off-sale liquor store and another during a gas station robbery. A liquor store on 22nd Street West and a shopping mall on 8th Street East experienced bear spray attacks during attempted thefts.
Hotel and Residential Attacks: A hotel on Circle Drive West was the scene of two bear spray incidents within an hour. A security guard and hotel guests were sprayed by suspects who fled before police arrived. In another case, a suspect smashed a window and deployed bear spray into a home on Westview Place, leaving residents suffering from exposure.
Police continue to investigate these incidents and urge anyone with information to contact the Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
