Thank you, Jim!
How old do you have to be to volunteer? At what age do you stop being a volunteer? Two great questions. And the answer? You can start at any age and stop at any age; and by the way, age is just a number. Some people are old at 30 and some not until their 80’s!
Jim Martin has been volunteering for a loooong time and at 72, he still enjoys doing it. Hockey is his passion, and he has been hanging out at the WCEC for 30-plus years as a goal judge for the Kindersley Klippers. He also has volunteered to do security at the games for 12 to 15 years. That can be a tough gig as no one likes to play the heavy with rowdy and sometimes drunk fans! But ya gotta do what ya gotta do eh Jim?
One of his highlights includes goal judging every game during the U18 championships in 2014 here in Kindersley. And that included the finals!
Jim is unique in that he doesn’t do it for money. He just does it for the love of the game. “Getting to know many players over the years helps to keep me younger,” he jokes. His passion for volunteering and his infectious smile are all always visible when he’s at the rink. You know he loves being there. So next time you’re at a Kindersley Klippers game, stop and say hi to Jim and say thank you for helping out. I know he would appreciate it.
