April Write Out Loud Features Saskatoon Metis Writer, Rita Bouvier

Rita Bouvier is a Metis writer, editor, and retired educator with 37 years in public education. She’s held significant leadership roles at the Gabriel Dumont Institute, the University of Saskatchewan, and served on the administration staff of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. She volunteers with arts and community organizations addressing systemic problems confronting society.

Ms. Bouvier’s fourth book of poetry, “a beautiful rebellion” (Thistledown Press, 2023), grew from her response to the Idle No More Movement. Her poems turn to the natural world for restoration and peace as she considers colonialism, patriarchy, “the murky waters of truth and reconciliation,” and climate change. She says, “I write to tell a larger story, one filled with love for family and community. I pass on knowledge handed down to me.”

Rita’s work has appeared in anthologies, musicals, and TV productions, and she’s authored and edited books on education and the experience of indigenous students. In 2014, she was named a laureate of the Indspire Award for Education, and in 2025, she was awarded an Order of Gabriel Dumont Gold Medal.

Write Out Loud is pleased to acknowledge the City of Swift Current for their season sponsorship and SIGA and the League of Canadian Poets for their sponsorships of this evening.

Write Out Loud commences April 16 at the Swift Current Lyric Theatre. Admission is $8. Doors open at 6:30. Local musician, Dillon Currie, will entertain at 7:00, and Ms. Bouvier’s presentation will follow.
