Second Floatel Proposed for Woodfibre LNG Site Near Squamish

Woodfibre LNG says it plans to apply for approval to add a second floating hotel, or “floatel,” at its liquefied natural gas project site near Squamish, B.C., aiming to house up to 900 additional workers.

The company confirmed it will submit an application to regulatory agencies to moor a second vessel alongside the MV Isabelle X, which is already stationed offshore to accommodate existing workers.

The original floatel sparked controversy after the District of Squamish denied Woodfibre LNG’s permit due to concerns over women’s safety, waste management, and broader community impacts. The project moved ahead after B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Office intervened and authorized the vessel.

Woodfibre LNG says the second floatel would go through the same “multiple levels of regulatory oversight” and would be moored about seven kilometres from Squamish, near the project site.

In a statement, the company said the MV Isabelle X has helped reduce pressure on local housing, traffic, and public services. If the second floatel is approved, Woodfibre LNG says it would contract Bridgemans Services Group again—the same Canadian company that procured and retrofitted the current floatel.

The LNG facility is expected to be operational by 2027 and will produce approximately 2.1 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually, primarily for export to Asia.
