Catching Up with the Outlook-Rudy FireFlies

We were excited to catch up with the FireFlies, a local group supporting the Outlook-Rudy Fire & Rescue. Formed in 2023, the FireFlies have become part of the community, championing fire safety education, organizing events, and raising awareness for the hardworking volunteer firefighters and first responders in the area. Here’s what they had to say about their mission, their impact, and how others can get involved.

Can you share the inspiration behind forming the Outlook-Rudy FireFlies and how the group came together?

The inspiration for our group came from the urgent need to have all our trucks and equipment in one space to reduce response times, we needed a more efficient fire hall that could house everything together.

The FireFlies were formed in 2023 as a women’s auxiliary to Outlook-Rudy Fire & Rescue, with the mission of supporting our local heroes and promoting community safety. We’re currently a group of ten firefighter spouses, focused on safety education and community engagement. While we do some fundraising, we prioritize “friend-raising,” offering the public a chance to see the impact our firefighters and first responders have on the community.

We’re a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local volunteer firefighters and first responders in the Town of Outlook, the RM of Rudy, and surrounding areas. Our core focus is on raising funds for operations, equipment, and training, as well as promoting fire safety awareness. Community involvement is also key, we aim to stay visible and engaged wherever we can.

What specific initiatives or events have the FireFlies organized to support local fire and rescue services?

Each October during Fire Prevention Week, the Outlook-Rudy Fire & Rescue crew and the FireFlies visit local schools, including Outlook Elementary, Outlook High, Lutheran Bible College Institute, Small Steps Early Learning Centre, and Outlook & District Playschool. In 2024, we reached over 800 children with safety presentations based on the national theme.

We also marked 115 years of service for the department in 2024 with commemorative coins.

Our events include the annual Fire Hall BBQ, Kids Zone and Car Smash at the Prairie Festival, Kids Carnival on Canada Day, and farm safety programming for elementary students. We also produce a yearly Fire Department calendar featuring event highlights and testimonials from those helped by emergency services.

In what ways has the community responded to the FireFlies’ efforts and initiatives?

The community, and surrounding RMs, have been incredibly supportive. People often thank us and encourage us to keep going. As a support group for “Our Heroes,” we try to be as present and visible as possible. Our motto is “Stronger Together,” and we want everyone to know we’re here to help, especially in times of emergency.

Are there upcoming events or projects that the FireFlies are planning to further support Fire and Rescue Services?

Yes! We’re partnering with the Knights of Columbus to host a Dinner and Silent Auction on May 16 in support of the new Fire Hall. Tickets are available at the Town of Outlook and other local businesses.

We’ll also host our annual Open House BBQ in September and participate in Fire Prevention Week in October. The Fire Department and FireFlies will be part of the Canada Day Parade, showcasing all units in our fleet. We also contribute a light display during Winter Wonderland at Outlook & District Regional Park.

In August, we’re co-hosting a Golf Tournament at Outlook Riverview Golf Club—and always looking for more ways to partner with local groups to make a difference.

How can community members get involved with or support the FireFlies in their endeavors?

We’re always looking for “Friends of the FireFlies.” We may be small, but we’re mighty, and we welcome anyone who wants to lend a hand. Attending meetings is great, but even helping at events makes a big impact.

You can support us by volunteering, attending events, making donations, spreading awareness, and backing our initiatives.

By getting involved, you’re helping not just the FireFlies, but the dedicated firefighters who protect our community. To connect with us or learn more, email us at: outlookrudyfireflies@gmail.com
