The Kev and the Rev Show: Buying Canadian

In this episode, Kev kicked it off by pointing out how many people are calling for a boycott of U.S. products. Buy Canadian! It’s as simple as grabbing a local beer instead of a Bud. But it isn’t that easy.

Kev admitted he’d learned that we get charged tariffs for shipping goods between provinces—between provinces. Why does it cost more to ship something from B.C. to Ontario than it does to bring it in from the States? The Rev jumped in, sharing a story about how hard it is to bring liquor into Quebec from the Maritimes. By the time you add in all the taxes, markups, and government red tape, your “Buy Canadian” bottle of rum ends up costing more than your patience.

Still, the Rev was clear, sometimes, the price tag isn’t the point—it’s the principle. If we want to support our neighbors and build something stronger at home, maybe it’s worth spending a bit more on Canadian-made stuff when we can.

That said, they agree sometimes it’s not easy. “You can’t grow broccoli at forty below,” Kev joked, and he’s not wrong. There are things we just don’t produce here, or we only make them in limited ways.
Piotr mentioned medication, specialty food items, and the kind of things that aren’t available locally no matter how patriotic you’re feeling.

The real kicker came when the Rev asked a question that stuck: “What if your buddy’s business relies on U.S. suppliers? You gonna boycott him too?” When real people with real jobs are involved, those lines start to blur fast. Maybe the label says ‘imported,’ but the guy behind the counter is your neighbor.

That’s where the conversation landed. Not on a clear answer, but on the idea that we’re all just trying to figure it out.
