Mustangs Return to Centennial Cup Final

Things are heating up!

With a 4-3 win over the OJHL champion Trenton Golden Hawks on Saturday, the Melfort Mustangs punched their ticket to the Centennial Cup final, and to top it off, it’s for the second straight year!

During this semifinal game, Ty Thornton and Nolan Patterson gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead just 47 seconds into the second period. Trenton responded with two quick goals to even the score.

Tristin Ziola put Melfort back in front at 17:38 of the second, finishing off a brilliant rush from Danton Cox. The Golden Hawks answered immediately, tying the game 18 seconds later.

With under seven minutes left in regulation, Zac Somers, who leads the Mustangs with five goals and two game-winners at the tournament, buried the decisive marker off a perfect setup from Logan Belton.

Kristian Coombs turned aside 18 shots for the win.

Melfort will now play for the national title, today, Sunday at 5:00 P.M. MDT. You can catch the Gold Medal Game live on TSN+ and HNLive.ca.
