A Mid-Spring Round up of Sorts….

The energizing nature of spring is all around us and it is oh so lovely. I find myself early to rise this time of year and drawn to all things that include gatherings and outdoors. April and May have been full of events and outdoor things, and I wanted to share some of the activities and happenings in our area.

1.) Gardening. Our short season of gardening has begun. If you caught my last article, I shared how I’ve gone complete millennial hobby energy on gardening this year and I cannot get enough. Particularly, I’m learning the significance of soil health and how to nurture it. One tip from the University of Saskatchewan I’ll be using is the practice of mulching instead of tilling. I’ve since invested in refreshingly, aromatic cedar mulch from Kodiak Sand and Gravel in Kindersley. I picked up my bails with a trailer, but they will deliver straight to your yard. It’s a beautiful touch to the landscape and means less watering for your plants, and less weeds to pull. It’s a less work, more leisure summer kind of investment.

2.) Art Classes. I’m happy to see Rylan Cocks back offering his guidance in all things art. I’ve been attending his art classes in Leader with my son for three years now and we both cannot wait to get back to his summer classes. Scroll his Instagram or visit makespace.ca to check out his workshops.

3.) Spring Events. The Eston 95 Lions hosted their 40th Ladies Night Out on April 26th and they did not disappoint. These Lions have always known how to throw a proper party. With countless prizes and a meal made by the ladies themselves, it was a night full of winner, winner and chicken dinner. Nostalgia was the theme as Jim Swan came out of retirement to bring the house down as the events DJ. His stage presence was one that jived effortlessly with the MC, Theresa Japp. Swan’s skills on entertaining a crowd are still melodically tuned in. It was a night for the books.

4.) Spring Events Part II. Pathway to Wellness, a volunteer administered community program serving Kindersley and area hosted Dr. Jody Carrington for a night full of empowerment on May 3, 2025. Pathway to Wellness, in partnership with the Town of Kindersley and Saskatchewan Health Authority is recognized as a Cardiac Rehab Centre and provides a space to manage your health, mobility and wellness journey. Dr. Jody Carrington was met with enthusiastic reception as she shared honest personal stories along with causes behind our current mental health crisis. Her tips? Stop sleeping next to your phone at night and don’t begin your day scrolling. The countless opinions and views at our fingertips are increasing stress levels at record speeds. Even with the hard truths she shared she left us feeling lighter and more connected than she found us.

5.) Fresh Salads. Tis the season for fresh produce. I am loving this Lentil Salad recipe shared by my friend and Faith in Fitness trainer, Ashley Weyer.

Salad:

1 cup of cooked lentils (drained and rinsed)
1 long cucumber, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
½ small red onion, diced
1/3 cup feta
1-2 tbsp Italian seasoning

Dressing:

¼ cup of olive oil
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp sugar free syrop
1 clove garlic, minced
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all salad ingredients, stir in dressing and serve.

6.) Ball and Soccer Season. We have the most dedicated volunteers in our area to help create the space outdoors for kids to play spring and summer sports. A huge shout out to Janelle Layton from JorAnn Safety who comes out to coach all age groups for soccer in Eatonia.

7.) Bonfires. This is hands down one of the most magical activities to do with others. My aussie friends recently taught me a new and fun way to cook hot dogs on the fire with a milk carton.

i. Place hot dog in bun and wrap it tightly in heavy duty foil.
ii. Cut off top of milk carton.
iii. Place foiled wrapped hot dog inside carton.
iv. Tear top 5cm of carton into strips to make it easier to light.
v. Light carton.
vi. Allow the carton to burn down slowly.
vii. Carefully remove the foil wrapped dogs with tongs.

Cheers to more gathering and the great outdoors.
