Here’s What Kevin Has to Say About the Main St. Construction

As we all know, there are two seasons in most Canadian cities and towns; we have winter and construction! And this time of year is no exception.

Here in Kindersley, we have our Main Street being dug up from the south service road all the way to Philips Court. Part one involves digging up the street and replacing the fresh water supply pipe. Part two comes next and that will involve digging the remaining section of the street and repaving. If all goes according to plan and the weather cooperates, everything should be done before the end of July. This particular section of piping (1,440 feet) was originally installed in 1956 and has been experiencing large leaks (most notably over this past winter when it was -30 outside.

Altogether we are looking at four to six weeks of inconvenience. And yes, let’s face it, all of us will be swearing and finding different routes to get from point A to point B. It’s not sexy. It’s not pretty. BUT, it does need to be done. They will also be replacing curb stops, valves and fire hydrants. Remember when the passing lanes were being done on Highway Seven to Saskatoon? How many of us were mad and impatient over the delays? And now? It’s all good. It was totally worth it.

Speaking with one of the construction workers today, he was telling me that some places, including Humboldt, still have wooden water supply lines. Wood! Well, the old-time sailing ships were made of wood so why not? The fact that they are still in use today is mind-boggling. Who’d of thunk?

So as you’re driving around town, try to remember why this project is happening. Nickel and dime repairs can end up costing more money than doing the job properly. As the old saying goes; “If you don’t have time to do the job right, where do you find time to do it over?”
