The Kev and the Rev Show: A Tougher Topic
We are looking back at an episode of The Kevin and The Rev Show, because this is STILL a lingering topic in today’s political climate: the idea, sometimes joked about, sometimes floated with more seriousness, of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States.
“It’s a bit more of a serious topic,” the Rev opened, reminding listeners that this was just a thoughtful conversation with no right or wrong answers.
Kev, a born and raised Canadian, and Rev, an immigrant and naturalized Canadian, tackled the subject from both personal and political angles. “Canada is not for sale,” Kev said emphatically when asked about the notion. “I think there’d be too much of a backlash from people up here to say yes.”
The conversation blended historical insight with some sharp observations. They recalled past U.S. attempts to invade Canada. “Not very well,” Kev said about how those turned out, and explored the challenges of a modern takeover. “A military invasion is not likely,” Rev noted, adding that the U.S. simply doesn’t have the numbers to occupy a country the size of Canada.
But the pair didn’t stop at military hypotheticals. They waded into the legal and political hurdles on both sides of the border.
Throughout the discussion, Kevin and Piotr reminded listeners that humor can be a coping mechanism. “The memes, the jokes, it’s not because we’re flippant,” Piotr said. “It’s because it weighs on us. It’s exhausting.”
And though the conversation ended on a more sobering note. “Life is tough enough without worrying about being annexed as another state,” Kevin concluded.
