The Pursuit of Happiness (or Not): A Kevin and Piotr Conversation
As the temperature rises, we thought we’d cool down here atThe Kev and the Rev Show, by throwing it back to an episode filmed in cooler temperatures but the conversation is applicable no matter the weather because Piotr and Kevin are asking: happiness vs. contentment.
It all began with a simple question from Kevin: What makes you happy? A hot cup of coffee? A well-crafted sermon? Avoiding a traffic ticket? While most might list life’s little joys, Rev threw a snowball into the conversation with his reply: “I don’t believe in happiness.”
Wait—what?
Rev explained that while many chase happiness like it’s the ultimate destination, he prefers the quieter, often overlooked feeling of contentment. He quoted Polish Nobel Prize-winning poet Czesław Miłosz, recalling a line about peace and stillness: “There was nothing in the world I could want to possess.” For Rev, true contentment is those rare moments when you’re not wanting or needing more—when you can simply be.
Kevin, ever the pragmatic optimist, made a fair point: Can’t people feel happiness in striving toward goals? Like training to be an athlete or working hard on a project? Rev agreed… sort of. He warned about the danger of chasing moving goalposts and quoted a lyric from Rush: “The point of the journey is not to arrive.”
Their friendly debate dug into whether happiness is something we arrive at—or something we chase endlessly. And in that pursuit, do we lose sight of those quiet moments of gratitude? Piotr thinks we do. Kevin wonders if maybe it’s a balance.
By the end of the episode, Kev was content. Rev was “very happy for him.” And listeners were left with something to think about: Are you chasing happiness—or making time to simply be content?
Until next time, stay warm or cool, and stay thoughtful!
