Travels With Melissa and Kevin: Can you say “Cretaceous”?
Pssst. Hey. Can you say “Cretaceous”? I knew you could. This is a word we saw displayed many times while at the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, AB. Also, Jurassic, Mesozoic, and many other names of times and eras gone by. It’s kind of hard to think about millions of years ago and these big creatures running around the Earth. Time is an amazing thing, and the people working here were also helpful and professional. Seeing all the displays of dinosaur skeletons and plant life rock impressions makes you wonder how they disappeared and why. The museum was overflowing with guests from all over, and everyone was enjoying their visit.
Watching youngsters get excited, pointing to the different skeletons, and getting their pictures taken was neat to see. Sometimes, being in a place like this museum brings out the kid in all of us. Even watching some of the workers in the lab (through a glass window) working on bones was extremely cool!
This is a museum that you must NOT rush through, as there are many exhibits to see and read about—but it is totally worth it! We found it was best to get our tickets online beforehand (especially if you know what time you’ll get to the museum), since there is typically a very long line of people waiting to buy theirs.
There are also hiking trails to try out (and many did), as well as a cafeteria with great selections. And, speaking of selections, the souvenir shop was doing a brisk business selling everything dino-related—from shirts and hoodies to books and other toys. Was it worth the trip? Absolutely it was. At only two hours and forty-five minutes from Kindersley, it’s an easy drive for the day!
