
Acclaimed Author, Sharon Butala, Opens Write Out Loud Season 2025-2026
Wednesday, September 17, Sharon Butala, renowned Canadian author, will launch the Swift Current Write Out Loud season. Ms. Butala has written 23 books of fiction and non-fiction, numerous essays, articles, poetry, and five produced plays, earning dozens of awards and honours. Her most recent book, How to Breathe Water (Freehand Books, 2025) is her third memoir, a love letter to the lands and waters of the prairies and a stirring exploration of the places and moments that mark and mold our lives.
Among her many honours, Ms. Butala has been a three-time finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award, and is a recipient of the Glengarry Book Award, the Marian Engel Award, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the Cheryl and Henry Kloppenburg Award for Literary Excellence, the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize, and has three honourary doctorates.
She’s conducted readings and book tours all over the world. Recently, she’s written about the lives of aging people, touching on, not only loneliness and loss, but on the richness of the elderly and the gifts they have to offer society.
In Southwest Saskatchewan, Ms. Butala and her now deceased husband, Peter Butala, are also known for donating land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada and helping create the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area.

Write Out Loud commences September 17 at the Swift Current Lyric Theatre. Admission is $10. Doors open at 6:30. Classical guitarist and Great Plains College Principal, Brad Mahon, will entertain at 7:00, and Ms. Butala’s presentation will follow.
