The Battleford and Kindersley Rivalry

I must say that it can sometimes be a burden being both a sports fan and being a sports reporter. You want to be objective but still cheer for your team.  Quite the conundrum, isn’t it? So, how can you be objective when you see things that aren’t right? I don’t like to criticize the officials because they are out there doing their job. But confound it, why are some blatant and obvious calls not made? And I don’t just mean against the Klippers. The officials must remain neutral and call a fair game, but in this reporter’s eyes, it did not seem like it. As well, the fans could not believe some of the non-calls. What happens next is that both teams become more chippy and take more liberties. Emotions are high as both teams want to win. And that is where the referees lost control of the Goose Festival match-up at the WCEC on Saturday, September 20th, between the Klippers and the Battleford North Stars.

But I digress. Until a particular incident in the third period, it was a well-played and hard-hitting game, even though the Klippers were behind.  Battleford and Kindersley have had a rivalry for many a year, and the North Stars were looking to avenge their Friday night home loss to these same Klippers. And they did. Some great goals and plays from both sides had the 1,104 fans cheering and groaning at the same time. Newcomer Kaegen Lowe was a force to be reckoned with for the Klippers. The Macklin, SK. forward scored the first and third goals and played a tough game. The final score was 6 to 3 for Battleford. As in previous editions of the Klippers, they played hard until the very end, letting the opposing team know they would not roll over and quit just because they were losing the game. So what happens now? Back to practice and getting ready to take on the Warman Wolverines on Friday, September 26th at 7:30 pm.
