ART & Soul Reflects Connections to Home & Craft

Anna Polsfut’s show, ART & Soul brings together a collection of works rooted in the places she has, over the years, called home—West Central Saskatchewan, summers at the lake, and Medicine Hat, Alberta. These locations serve as the backdrop for her bodies of work which are shaped by personal experience and creative drive.

At the core of the exhibit is passion, and that focus is where the show gets its name. “Creating is my true passion, and everything depicted in the show comes from the heart, which is where the title “ART & Soul” originates from,” shared Anna. Every piece comes from a place of genuine interest and connection, offering a mix of styles and media.

“All of my works have a personal story behind them, however. I really love my relief prints specifically “On the Move”, “Wine Not”, and “Strong & Free”, as they were part of my final project for our graduation show at Medicine Hat College. They were displayed in their One-on-One Gallery there at the college.

Putting the show together wasn’t without its challenges. Choosing which pieces to include was tough! Anna felt it was important to balance different methods and styles while keeping the show cohesive. The final selection includes a combination of relief printing, silkscreen printing, and photography. “My favourite piece in the show is my “Owl”, this piece was one of my more difficult relief prints that I created. I spent lots of time making sure he was both natural looking, while staying playful and abstract. I just think he has the most adorable face and would look lovely in anyone’s collection.”

Relief and silkscreen printing, along with photography are the preferred mediums for Anna, with relief printing and silkscreen printing offering a slower, hands-on process that provides a break from screens and distractions. Photography, on the other hand, is a way to explore and document the world—whether out with others or alone. Recently, she’s been working on more night sky photography, including the northern lights and nighttime prairie shots., which may appear in future shows!

Since opening at the end of June, the exhibit has received a strong response from visitors. “I would like to give my thanks to everyone who attended my reception, as well as those who have visited during the regular hours of the Museum. I would also like to thank the organizers of the event; they treated me and my guests so kindly throughout the whole process of setup to the reception, and the snacks they served were amazing. My pieces will be there until the end of August, so if you haven’t visited, please do! The Eston Museum is located above the gallery, so please stop in and donate to the Eston Museum (Prairie West Historical Society) as well. They have so many wonderful displays to enjoy!”
