LEGO in the Library a Big Hit During Library Week in Davidson
For the third year, the Davidson School Library partnered with the Davidson Palliser Regional Library to offer LEGO in the Library during Saskatchewan Library Week. The School Library hosted the program by holding story times during each day of Library Week and the Palliser Library graciously loaned their great LEGO collection, so that the students could build LEGO creations that relate to the stories.
On Monday, Grade 1 and Kindergarten students with their caregivers came in after school. Wild About Books by Judy Sierra was the book read and the students used the Kindergarten’s great toy animal collection and LEGO to build their our very own zoos, aquariums and even animal libraries!
Art students in Grades 7, 8 and 9 participated in LEGO creative scene challenges during their classes on Tuesday. After school on Tuesday, Grades 4 and up were invited to work on stop motion videos and LEGO robotics. Students literally “launched” into this session with the story The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield.
Wednesday was Grade 2 LEGO after school day, where student did creative building of a variety of scenes and structures. Some students were inspired to build their very own witch trap after reading How to Catch a Witch by Alice Walstead.
Thursday’s second Grade 4 students was unfortunately postponed until November 2 but on Friday, Grade 3 students read The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Jon Klassen and built bridges, trolls and goats as well as some other cool vehicles that could float in water.
Over 90 students and caregivers came out after school for the four days of LEGO in the School Library.
In addition to the LEGO and book reading, the school library also had two in-house contests during the week and participated in the Saskatchewan Library Association’s Book Spine Poetry contest.
For the Book Spine Poetry Contest, laminated paper Scrabble tiles were hidden around the school hallways for Grades 7 to 12 students to find on Monday morning and add towards their Scrabble team points. Three teams registered for the noon hour Scrabble Tournament, with a Scholastic Book Fair Credit as the final prize.
Students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 were invited to enter a “Reasons You Love Reading” contest, where over 50 students submitted pictures and writeups to win Book Fair Credits. The fall Scholastic Book Fair is held in the library the week after Saskatchewan Library Week.
