King Charles III’ Christmas Speech focuses on climate and conflict

In his Christmas message, King Charles III focused on public service, linking it to the wellbeing of the planet and ongoing global conflicts. Recorded at Buckingham Palace beside a Christmas tree, he drew inspiration from the teachings of Jesus, emphasizing service to the less fortunate. He praised those who selflessly contribute to society, calling them the backbone of our communities.

This speech marked King Charles’ second Christmas address since ascending the throne in September 2022, following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. However, it was his first since the coronation in May, a ceremony filled with traditional pageantry. His long-standing commitment to environmental causes was evident, as he expressed concern at the COP28 Climate Meeting about the slow progress in achieving climate goals.

Demonstrating his dedication to sustainability, the Christmas tree beside him, adorned with natural decorations, was to be replanted after the holidays, marking a first for Buckingham Palace. The video included highlights from the past year, showcasing his environmental efforts during a state visit to Kenya and scenes from his coronation. His eldest son, Prince William, along with Kate and their children, were seen engaged in community service, aligning with the coronation’s theme of service to others.

Notably absent from the footage was Prince Harry, who, along with his wife Meghan, left the senior royal ranks in 2020 to reside in the U.S. Harry’s attendance at the coronation alone and the release of his controversial memoir “Spare” intensified family tensions. In his message, King Charles addressed the grave conflicts worldwide, specifically in Ukraine and between Israel and Hamas, calling for compassion and empathy in line with Christ’s teachings.
