So You’ve Bought an EV, Now What?

With gas prices rising, more and more people are looking to purchase electric vehicles for a cost-saving and environmentally-friendly way to get around.

But no matter which model vehicle you choose, there are some things to do to prepare yourself and your home for the switch.

Choose your charger
Your electric vehicle, also known as an EV, will need to be plugged in for charging when you’re not out driving. When shopping for a charging station, do your research and make sure it’s approved for use in Canada. Look for an official mark or label of a recognized certification or evaluation agency.

Consider the size of the charging station, where you’ll want to have it installed at home, and choose one that supplies the amount of power you need. For example, if you have two EVs, you’ll require more powerful electrical support than for one. You can hire a Licensed Electrical Contracting business to help figure out your best set up.

Install it safely
Once you have your charging station, you can either install it on your own or hire a Licensed Electrical Contracting business to do it for you. Remember: EVs can use a lot of power so it’s important to make sure that your electrical panel can handle the extra load. If your home requires a panel upgrade, don’t put it off or forget about it. Preventative maintenance is key. You will need to contact your local utility about making the change. Ensure the LEC business files a permit with the Electrical Safety Authority before the work begins. Ask them for a copy of the Certificate of Acceptance once complete.

Keep it clear
If your charging station is outside, make sure it’s suited for outdoor use. Keep any cables off the floor or ground to avoid potential tripping and to keep the cord in good shape.
