KFD’s Recap of Events

Hello all, Cody Phinney with the Kindersley Fire Brigade here. Back for another recap of events of the
last couple weeks.

As you may remember we had eight members from our Brigade participating in their NFPA 1072 HazMat
testing on June 25 th , and I am very happy to relay that they all passed with flying colours. Two members
of the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency came out of Prince Albert to conduct the evaluations, both
being full time members of the Prince Albert Fire Department. The day started off bright and early with
a brief meeting to discuss the evaluation criteria and quickly launched into testing scenarios. Scenarios
included simulated derailments, indoor chemical spills, decontamination, and even an improvised
explosive device scenario. Congratulations to all applicants in their successful evaluations.

Going forward all eligible members will be training for their NFPA 1001 Professional Firefighter
qualifications. This qualification will be instrumental in the departments capabilities to provide high
quality firefighting and fire prevention services to the residents of the R.M. and the Town of Kindersley,
as well as anyone passing through the area on the highways. Members will be evaluated in a range of
different skills for achieve this qualification such as ventilation techniques, vehicle extrication, forcible
entry, and fire behaviors to name a few. The KFB is planning to have all eligible members certified by the
end of 2023.

If you were out and about during Canada Day celebrations, you may have run into members of our
Public Education team at Bakers Park with some games and equipment on display. We had Engine 1,
Rescue 2 and our brand-new Public Education trailer on scene available for tours. The Public Education
was very popular as guided tours through the trailer’s simulations were offered, as well as some goodies
for all participants available at the end. We also had a hose out for people to spray water on a wooden
“house fire’, as well as a dunk tank and a slip & slide. The night was capped off with some late fireworks
due to rain, that saw members and three of our apparatus’ on scene to provide fire protection in case of
any accidents. We hope everyone had a safe and fun Canada Day weekend!

If you follow our Facebook page you may have noticed we posted about some changes that came into
effect as of July 1 st in regards to the placement and amounts of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide
detectors that are now required in all residential buildings in Saskatchewan. According to the
Government of Saskatchewan updates on their website, all buildings in Saskatchewan with sleeping
rooms are required to provide early warning protection against the effects of carbon monoxide
poisoning, smoke and fire. Smoke alarms must be installed inside each sleeping room as well as on each
floor with a smoke alarm located between the sleeping rooms and the remainder of the floor. Feel free
to check out our Facebook page for an infographic and a more in-depth post regarding the new
regulations.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I will see you again in the next edition of Kindersley
Social.
