Loose Dog Attacks Two Saskatoon Children

On Wednesday afternoon in Saskatoon, a dog that was roaming freely in the 2700 block of 33rd Street West attacked a five-year-old and a 13-year-old.

The incident prompted multiple calls to the Saskatoon Police Service and animal control officers. Along with the two children, two adults who tried to assist them and the dog’s owner also suffered bites during the attack. The dog was subsequently taken into custody by animal control, while the injured children were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.

Sheila Gibbons, a representative from the Saskatoon SPCA, highlighted several possible reasons for dogs biting, including nervousness, anxiety, pain, or illness. Emphasizing that any dog has the potential to bite, Gibbons advised exercising caution around unfamiliar dogs. In situations where an unknown dog approaches, she recommended maintaining a calm demeanor, as dogs can sense and respond to human energy. Gibbons further advised individuals, particularly children, to adopt a “tree” posture by keeping their arms tucked in, looking down, avoiding eye contact, and staying composed.

Gibbons also stressed the importance of obtaining permission from a dog’s owner before approaching the animal, even when the dog is accompanied by its owner.
