The West Central Events Centre (WCEC) witnessed history on October 15 as it hosted the first-ever SJFHL (Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League) game, when the Western Prairie Junior Klippers girls team faced off against the Lumsden Lynx.
The game marked the beginning of their journey in the SJFHL, with the puck drop at 3 pm.
The Klippers got off to a slow start, with the Lumsden Lynx lighting the scoreboard first late in the first period. Nikita Schmidt’s goal with just over two minutes left in the period set the Lynx on the path to victory. The second period saw no scoring, but Schmidt struck again in the third period, this time on the powerplay, to double the Lynx’s lead. Six minutes later, Hannah Sexsmith secured her fifth goal of the season, sealing the final score at 3-0 in favor of the Lynx.
Despite the Klippers’ best efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net against Payton Schlamp, who earned a well-deserved shutout victory.
While the outcome wasn’t what was hoped for, attendees still had a great time and were in for a treat with a guaranteed $500 50/50 draw, various giveaways such as 100 cookies, and kid raffles. The Mielke and Chester families generously donated baskets. There was also a pink basket in recognition and support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The event’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the volunteers and board members who lent their support to ensure everything went smoothly. Shout-out goes to Terry Shea of KODIAK Sand and Gravel for sponsoring the helmets, a pivotal part of the team’s uniforms. Thank you Panago pizza donated pizza and wings for the post game team meet and greet! Elizabeth Boisjoli organized the U9 skate during the first intermission and it was a huge hit!
The Western Prairie Junior Klippers’ next game is scheduled for October 28, where they will hit the road to Outlook to face off against the Ice Hawks.
