Who We Are and What We Do

West Central Abilities has been a part of the community of Kindersley for nearly 50 years! We provide support to individuals experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities. Everyone is different and the services we provide are therefore varied and unique to each person.

Disability Service Professionals have many responsibilities including preparing meals with the individuals, assisting with medications, supporting individuals to complete their personal care, and encouraging individuals to discover and experience new things at home and in their community.

As much as possible, in our work, we aim to give each person choice and encourage them to be as independent as possible. This means that individuals contribute to the daily tasks of their home, such as cooking meals, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc. to the best of their ability. When an individual identifies a goal, such as learning to make their grandma’s chicken noodle soup, it is the role of our staff to assist in meeting their goal. This might mean that the staff dial the phone so the individual can call a family member for the recipe, assist with shopping for the groceries and prepping the meal, or it might simply mean that the staff plans that Grandma’s Chicken Noodle soup is what’s for supper.

The role of our staff is to assist people to live the life that they want to live, support them to maintain their health, provide a safe home or workplace atmosphere, and so much more! West Central Abilities staff are expected to come into their position with basic knowledge such as First Aid training and grade 12, but the most important characteristic is a positive and respectful attitude!

Disability Service Professionals receive a multitude of on-the-job trainings from Transfers, Lifts and Repositioning training to learn how to safely lift and move objects and people to CLSD Level One and Two where we learn about the functions of behaviour, how to support individuals to make decisions and how to approach challenging behaviours with dignity and respect.

After almost 50 years, we still strive to help each individual build the life that they want! Check out our website to see more of what we do! www.westcentralabilities.ca

We are very excited that work has begun on our Day Program building in the heart of the community! There will be a sod turning September 22, 2021, at 1:00 pm at 122 1st Avenue West (inclement weather event will be held at 1001 7th Avenue West).
