Kindersley Sees Newly Established Family History Centre

In a bid to bridge the gap between the past and the present, Kindersley residents now have the chance to delve into their family roots like never before, thanks to the newly established Family History Centre. This initiative comes through the concerted efforts of Elder Van Item and Elder Bowen, local missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“We decided to start this because we had registered Family History Centre resources that were sitting unused, and we welcomed someone new to our congregation who expressed interest,” they shared.

The Centre offers an open-door policy, ensuring that anyone with an interest in tracing their lineage can engage. “Anyone can drop in when we are open! We can also make individual appointments as needed,” they assured.

In order to start searching for family information, a free familysearch.org account is needed, but for those unfamiliar with the process, not to worry, Elder Van Item and Elder Bowen are ready to extend a helping hand in setting up these accounts.

Both have personally tested the waters, looking into their own family history. “We’ve both tried it, and it’s pretty great! Neither of us have delved too deep, but we’ve found it to be pretty easy and rewarding. This firsthand experience enables them to guide and support individuals who are trying this out for the first time. The public has access to all sorts of records: censuses; birth, marriage, and death certificates; graves; immigration; etc. And all of these types can be accessed from home! The Family History Centre, however, has access to premium content that is unavailable to the general public. More records, more tools for organizing information, etc.” they explain.

Rain or shine, the Centre will be open for those who wish to chart their family’s history. “This will be an ongoing service until we have a compelling reason to stop.”

If you would like to learn more about your family’s past, you can visit 820 1st St. W, Kindersley on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 7pm to 8:15pm. If you have questions or concerns, you can call 306-430-8002
