Mounties say people driving too fast for the weather conditions

At least 10 reports of semi-trucks driving into the ditch on Highway 1 kept Indian Head Mounties busy Tuesday as the province got another blast of winter.

“From semis hitting the ditch to jack-knifing, people were driving too fast for the road conditions,” Cpl. Derek Friesen said.

“Due to the weather conditions the road was extremely icy … and at one point there were three semis, two trucks and an SUV in the ditch.”

A bottleneck on the Trans-Canada had traffic back up for about 30 minutes after a cluster of semis and passenger vehicles drove off the road on the westbound lanes of Highway 1 about four kilometres east of Indian Head, Sask.

RCMP were called in for traffic control, allowing space and time for tow trucks to pull the semis out of the ditch.

Cpl. Friesen said just after the lunch hour two semis collided with each other on the highway with one semi sideswiping the other sending the other into the ditch.
