My brother has joined us for a few days. Not so much for a visit (although he comes from “The Island”), but to help us build two decks, one for the back and one for the front. Many years ago, my brother and I built a deck. Now, almost 40 years later, we are at… Continue reading Decks, Not Docks
Author: Ron Baker
Ron Baker is a recently retired (2005) member of the Kindersley community. His roots run deep – his grandfather homesteaded just outside Kindersley in the early 1900's. Ron was born in the old Kindersley Hospital, has made his home in various other communities over the years, but keeps coming back. Committed to the community, Ron has found his local involvement has proved to be great fodder for some hilarious tales and tragic events. His experience in administration and working with people, along with his love for a good story, ought to help to bring daily life to life! Ron blogs at ronbaker.ca, and is pleased to be a part of the writing “crew” at Kindersley Social.
Climate Change – A Forecaster’s Perspective
My eight year old brain was hard at work. In my backyard, I had stared into the sky for some time. I began to do some backwards forward thinking. Now, I was only eight – I knew I was here. Then there was mom and dad. And those pesky siblings – who some days were… Continue reading Climate Change – A Forecaster’s Perspective
On Walking Across the Street
Yes, we are moving! Across the Street. The adventure began a year and a half ago. OK, more like three years ago. We moved to our present abode in Kindersley, just across the highway from the Recycling Depot (formerly Waste Management site, formerly the town dump when I was young!). Across the street was an… Continue reading On Walking Across the Street
Birthday Parties
This past month was my mother’s birthday. She turned 87. In a memory-deficient care home, she is happy, hums all the time and is cared for well. On Facebook all sorts of friends are having their birthdays – a reflection of indoor activity during the fall and winter months. Every year we get older. We… Continue reading Birthday Parties
Dirt, Rubber, Noise And Fire
When the noise erupts, the earmuffs protect. When the dirt flies, the scene becomes clouded. When the race finishes, the winner emerges. Our Saturday adventure to the Kindersley Dirt Drags and Tractor Pulls on July 20, 2019, was well worth the ticket price! My son-in-law is a mechanic from North Central Saskatchewan. We invited the… Continue reading Dirt, Rubber, Noise And Fire
Working Together Without Killing Each Other!
We live in a day and age when two supposedly different approaches to solving the world’s problems are front and center. While accepting that simplicity can be a dangerous thing, let me illustrate. Justin Trudeau observes virtues that he feels are important, and applies the principles top his politics. In order to maintain sanity, he… Continue reading Working Together Without Killing Each Other!
Ron Baker: The Internet, Living on the Dark Side
I was an early adopter of the internet – back when it wasn’t even called the internet. I programmed in Fortran IV and worked with Databases in Dbase 3 programming language. With another programmer, I helped fashion a transcript creation program for Master’s level courses at a post secondary institution. While finishing a Master of… Continue reading Ron Baker: The Internet, Living on the Dark Side
The Mosaic Trio Masters Music
Sunday, June 6th at the Kindersley Alliance Church three ladies opened the treasure of music to the around 80-100 who attended. Imagine a cellist, a clarinetist, and a piano – a bowed string instrument, a wind instrument and a percussive instrument. Each musician is a master of their instrument. Aspiring instrumentalists attend for inspiration and… Continue reading The Mosaic Trio Masters Music
Modern Day Colonialism??
There is a new ambassador for Canada – for Women, Peace and Security. The cynic in me says that this is a way to satisfy women voters and perhaps even get the Western vote by appointing an Albertan to the office of Ambassador. The lexicographer (the one who likes to understand dictionary words) wonders if… Continue reading Modern Day Colonialism??
Rural & Small Churches Fight for Survival
St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Kindersley will suspend services June 24th, 2019. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Trenton, Ontario, with a congregation of around 50, is seeking ways to repurpose their sprawling building to alleviate financial stresses. The town of Eatonia is served by three small churches, each seeking ways to remain viable and effective… Continue reading Rural & Small Churches Fight for Survival
