Christopher Lake community helping family impacted by fire

The Christopher Lake, Sask., community is coming together after a fire burned a local family’s home Monday morning.

Lakeland and District Fire Chief Chris McShannock said his team received the call about a fire located 20 kilometres northeast of Christopher Lake just after 11 a.m. When they arrived about 14 minutes later the home was ablaze but the family was able to get out safely.

“It’s heartbreaking to have a fire at any time of the year but especially at this time of the year. It tugs at the heart strings a little more to know that these people lost pretty much everything within just a couple of hours,” McShannock said.

The fire crew was able to put the fire out and even saved the family’s cat. They also made a point of retrieving presents that had survived the fire.

McShannock said someone else in the community has given the family a home to stay in while the situation is figured out. People in the community have also started a Go Fund Me page called the William’s Fire Fund.

“When the community is small it’s a little more intimate and it’s easier to help these people,” McShannock said.

There is no initial cause of the fire yet but the investigator has ruled out the Christmas tree. McShannock said they estimate about $200,000 in damages.
