Distracted Driving Focus of National Safe Driving Week

National Safe Driving Week – December 1 – 7, 2019

With the holiday season arriving and bringing extra traveling and celebrations it is important to remember to be safe when behind the wheel.

One of the oldest annual campaigns of the Canada Safety Council, National Safe Driving week has been running since the 1950s!

This year, Distracted Driving is the focus of the week-long campaign aimed at reminding motorists the importance of safe driving practices.

Distracted driving is a trend on the rise, according to Transport Canada, distraction was the contributing factor in 21 per cent of fatal collisions and 27 per cent of collisions resulting in serious injury in 2016. In 2006, the numbers were reported at 16 and 22 per cent.

The biggest challenge in combating this problem is addressing the issue where drivers understand that distracted driving is dangerous and illegal, yet are still willing to use their devices behind the wheel anyway.

“If you’re in the majority of road users who understand the risks, you owe it to your family and to fellow road users to put the phone away and otherwise minimize distractions.” says Gareth Jones, president of the Canada Safety Council.

The issue of distraction does not rest with devices alone, distracted driving is characterized as any action that removes your focus from the road. This can include, adjusting music or your GPS, eating, or interacting with other passengers.

Tips to Avoid Distraction While Behind the Wheel:

  • Put your phone on silent or Do Not Disturb Mode.
  • Keep your phone out of sight, in the glove compartment or in the back seat.
  • Adjust your GPS, temperature or music before you start driving.
  • Remember, if it is that important, pull over.
