UPDATE: Extreme Cold Warning Continued for Kindersley & Area

UPDATE – 4:15AM, December 29, 2017

Extreme Cold Warning in effect for R.M. of Kindersley, including Kindersley Brock and Flaxcombe, R.M. of Chesterfield including Eatonia and Mantario, R.M. of Oakdale including Coleville, R.M. of Snipe Lake including Eston and Plato, R.M. of Progress including Kerrobert and Luseland, R.M. of Newcombe including Glidden and Madison

According to Environment Canada, a frigid arctic air mass caused extreme wind chills to occur throughout the northern Grainbelt and Southern Saskatchewan this morning.

Light snow combined with cloud kept a relatively moderate temperatures through Thursday night over portions of Saskatchewan South of Yellowhead. However, the skies are expected to clear and the mercury will plummet with wind chills of -40 or colder throughout most of the province.

Friday night is expected to be exceptionally cold. Temperatures will fall well into the -30’s, along with wind chill falling to the -40’s. Temperatures will likely not moderate during Saturday, extreme wind chills are expected.

Please be advised to dress warmly and in layers. Cover skin as frostbite can develop in minutes. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.

Please take your pets inside. If you are working outside take frequent breaks to warm up.

This morning wind chills were well under -30 across Southern Saskatchewan. Wind chills are expected to plummet to -40 in many locations this morning. The frigid winds will likely ease up later this morning.

Environment Canada warns of another blast of frigid air on Friday,  wind chills are expected to be particularly severe. The cold temperatures of mid -20’s to -30’s combined with the wind will deliver widespread and severe wind chills of -40 to -45 throughout southern Saskatchewan this Friday.

The wind chills are expected to persist into the entire weekend.

Please remember to dress warmly and in layers. Cover skin, frostbite can develop in minutes with the extreme wind chills. Carry emergency supplies in your vehicle.

Please take your pets inside. If you are working outside, take frequent breaks to warm up.

4:42AM, December 27, 2017

Winds of 10 to 15km/hr combined with clear skies and a frigid Arctic airmass produced extreme wind chill early this morning. The wind chill plummeted temperatures anywhere from -38 to -44. Cloud cover and light winds have moderated wind chills in Southwestern and West central areas, ending the extreme wind chill warnings in those areas.

Temperatures might moderate slightly this afternoon, but only briefly before another frigid Arctic intrusion arrives later tonight. This sweep of cold air is expected to last into the weekend. The extreme cold warning is expected to continue for much of southern Saskatchewan today.

Please be advised to dress warmly and to keep skin covered to decrease risk of frostbite. If working outside, take breaks regularly to warm up.

Travel with extra blankets and emergency supplies.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Kindersley and area due to a frigid arctic air mass that has settled into the province. Overnight lows this week are expected into the minus thirties with daytime highs in the minus twenties or so. With such cold temperatures, the moderate wind has created frigid wind chills of -35 to -45.

The cold snap is not expected to be short-lived, but will likely continue for the rest of the 2017 calendar year in Southern Saskatchewan. Environment Canada warns there will be periods of extreme wind chills.

Be advised to dress warmly. Layers are recommended as you can remove if you get to warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Keep in mind that extreme wind chill creates the risk of frost bite and hypothermia. Emergency supplies should be kept in your vehicle, including jumper cables and extra blankets.
