Former MLA Hit with 35K Environment Fine

Kindersley’s former MLA, Bill Boyd, was just fined $35,000 in court this morning, for two violations of wildlife habitat protection and environmental laws.

Boyd was Kindersley’s former MLA from the Saskatchewan Party who announced his retirement amidst flying accusations in late summer of 2017. Former Premier Brad Wall then booted Boyd from caucus as it was revealed that Boyd was engaged in a conflict of interest regarding an immigration-irrigation plan.   Boyd was later replaced with Ken Francis, also from the Saskatchewan Party, in a by-election on March 1, 2018.

Boyd was not present in the Kindersley Court this morning as sketchy road and weather conditions prevented him from making the trip. Boyd pled guilty to the two environment charges in early February, one charge under the Environmental Management and Protection Act and the other under the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act.

Today it was decided that Boyd should be fined $5,000 plus a $2,000 surcharge for cultivating an area of native grass near Eston, SK between the dates of April 1 and May 3, 2017. Boyd was also sentenced a fine of $20,000 plus a $8,000 surcharge for modifying a riverbank.

The total fine for the riverbank modification is right in line with what Crown Prosecutor Matthew Miazga called for back in February. Miazga said that the complications surrounding the remedies needed for the banks justified a $25,000 – $30,000 fine.

These are the remaining two charges of the original four back in 2017; the other two charges were dropped in February.
