Jean Norman Figure Skating Competition

KINDERSLEY HOSTS – JEAN NORMAN/STARSKATE COMPETITION

Date:  February 26, 2016 – February 28, 2016

Location: West Central Events Centre, 500 2nd St East, Kindersley SK

The West Central Events Centre will be a busy place at the end of February.  The Kindersley Skating Club in conjunction with Skate Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the 2016 Jean Norman/StarSkate Competition will take place February 26, 27 and 28, 2016 in Kindersley, SK.  The events will bring 300 skaters from 39 clubs across the province to our town for a weekend of competition and fun.     Of the 300 skaters coming, 11 will be from the local club.  Kindersley is excited for the opportunity to host this competition as this is the first time they have been able to host since 2009 due to the rink fire in 2010 which occurred while they were hosting the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The Jean Norman Competition runs Friday to Sunday with skaters in different categories, including the free skates, element, interpretive, dance, spins and jumps.  We encourage the public to come out to enjoy the competition and cheer on our athletes as they compete.  There is no entry fee for spectators and we hope to show the skaters what a great supportive community Kindersley can be!

Jean Norman was born and raised in Saskatoon where she skated with the Saskatoon Figure Skating Club.  She was one of the first skaters from the Saskatoon Skating Club to take CFSA tests.  Jean was an integral member of the skating club by holding most club positions at some time or another, including Club President.  Jean also became a Gold judge in figures and dancing and a Silver Pairs judge.  Every competition saw her actively engaged as Judge, Accountant or both.  The demands on her time became greater and greater with weekends, evenings and holidays being spent in long hours of judging and strenuous miles of travelling.  However, she gave diligently far beyond her physical capabilities.

In December 1975 Jean Norman succumbed to cancer and this Competition is held annually in her memory, but her most enduring memorial will remain the example of enthusiasm, courage and devotion to duty which she gave to all whose lives she touched.

For further information on the competition or the local competitors or if you would like to help out our club and volunteer, please contact the Kindersley Skating Club’s local media liaison, Amanda Bertoia at a_bertoia79@hotmail.com or 306-463-2997.  We look forward to seeing you throughout the weekend as you report on this significant event for the Town of Kindersley.
