The Klippers got off to a great start to the regular season, as they beat their long-time nemesis, the North Battleford Stars, not once, but twice, in their opening season games.
The Klippers opened the season at the Battlefords Civic centre, a historically hard spot for the Klippers. However, the Klippers played some of their best hockey yet and secured a few key goals right off at the start, the game ended at a tough 3-1 Klippers favour and they left the ice leaving a stunned Stars team wondering what just happened.
Klippers fans streamed to the West Central Events Center (WCEC) for the first home game of the season on September 15. The Stars were more prepared for the Klippers in this game, but firm on their own home ice, the Klippers again carried the victory and closed the game with a 3-2 lead over the Stars.
Goose Festival weekend games were a mixed bag for the Klippers as the home game with the Melfort Mustangs found the Klippers victorious with a 5-4. An away game, again with Melfort, on Sunday didn’t find the Klippers quite as limber as the team fell to Melfort 5-3.
Monday the Klippers were on the road again with the Estevan Bruins. The Bruins, another tough opponent was no match for the Klippers that night as the Klippers carried the day 4-2. The Klippers will again face the Bruins on Thursday, September 27 at the WCEC.
The Klippers will have back to back home games this week as on Saturday, September 29, they will host the Humboldt Broncos—a team that has been close to the hearts of many since the haunting bus crash in April. On the Klippers website, the following letter was posted:
“…On Saturday, September 29, we invite you to bring your “Sticks out for Humboldt” hockey sticks with you to the game and join us in a stick-tap salute as the Broncos take the ice prior to the ceremonial puck drop and anthem. That night is our first responder appreciation night so please mark it on your calendars to come recognize a brave group of young men and our local first responders who serve us so diligently.
We know there are many emotions still surrounding the tragedy of that day, and we all handle those in different ways and at different times. This acknowledgement and salute is a simple yet genuine recognition for their bravery suiting up in a Broncos’ uniform in the wake of such tragedy, while respecting their wishes to move on from the tragedy and resume some semblance of normalcy….we want to do what they and the league has (sic) directed as a simple, genuine tribute.”
