Local Store Plans Fundraiser for Pet Appreciation Month

In honor of Pet Appreciation Month, hosted by PetValu stores across Canada, Kindersley’s PetValu hopes to raise over $3,500 in donations—with all proceeds directed to the local animal care group KAWS.

“This year we need donations more than ever for KAWS, they are fostering and caring for roughly 11 dogs and 20 cats right now; and we are heading into warmer weather, which almost always means more kittens.” Barbara Punter, Store Manager of PetValu, explained that while the nationwide PetValu stores’ aim is to raise over $1,770,000 for animals in need, the Kindersley portion of $3,500 is a personal store goal. Last year, the store raised $2,649 for KAWS, so this year the bar is raised a little.

To the goal, Punter explained that the store is looking for corporate sponsors, as well as pet families to chip in any way they can. A large donation bin is set up by the store door, ready and waiting for purchased and donated cans, bags, and tins of food, treats, and health-care items to be placed inside. The bin is also for unused pet supplies already purchased and taking up space in pet-owners’ homes. Donations of cash are also accepted as the store has a specific tab on the till to ring the donations through, and “pet paws” can be purchased along with any other regular store item purchase.

Kindersley’s PetValu is also hosting a puppy training class on April 14th with Linnsay Hamilton, RVT; ticket proceeds directly to the fundraiser. The class is currently full, and Punter says she looks forward to seeing puppy parents gain valuable experience with their pups while their funds go to a good cause.

A first annual adoption weekend on April 20-22 will be hosted in the PetValu store as well, featuring several puppies that KAWS rescued several months ago.

The first annual National Pet Appreciation Month was started back in 2011, and since then PetValu stores across Canada have raised $8.8 Million, which helped find forever homes for 24,120 pets in need. “Pets are a big part of who we are,” Punter said proudly. “This month, pet owners everywhere have an opportunity to give a lonely pup, dog, kitten, or cat the safe and loving home they deserve.”
