Nova Scotians volunteer to field Red Cross calls from Harvey victims

An American Red Cross call centre in Cape Breton has been overwhelmed by calls from victims of Harvey, but local volunteers are stepping up to help clear the backlog.

Officials at the Sydney, N.S., call centre, one of two in North America connecting flood victims with aid on the ground in Texas, have already signed up 100 volunteers to assist staff.

Arlene MacDonald says she offered her time after seeing on television “elderly people being carried out in their wheelchairs and the devastation on their faces.”

“It’s just so difficult for them,” she said.
