Record Breaking Weekend at Golden Bear Open

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies 4 x 200 metre relay team laid down a record breaking performance on the track at the 2016 Golden Bear Open in Edmonton.

The team consisting of Graham Black, Jared Olson, Adam Paslawski and Garrett Peters crossed the finish line in a time of 1:27.77. In the process they bested the meet record set in 2000, the Alberta indoor record set back in 1979 and recorded the best time by a Huskie team.

The gold medal was one of seven top finishes by Huskie athletes at the event.

Black brought home two gold medals with a win in the 300m dash in a time of 34.14. Olson joined his relay teammate with a second gold over the weekend, coming in tied for first with a time of 8.459 in the 60m hurdles.

Cole Digel was the third individual gold medal winner on the men’s side with a performance of 4716 points in the heptathlon to take home first place.

On the women’s side, it was another relay team finishing at the top of the race board. The 4 x 800m team of Julianne Labach, Sophia Zemlak, Mackenzie Chartier and Tye Buttner finished first with a time of 9:18.89.

Astrid Nyame brought home the title in the pentathlon. Nyame won by a wide margin of over 500 points with a final total of 3706 in the event.

Olena Olenick rounded out the Huskie gold medallists with a top finish in the weight throw. Olenick’s best result of 17.01m was more than enough to win the event.
