Red Lions Look to Turn Tide

After a do-or-die effort to get into the SWHL Finals, the Kindersley Red Lions face a grim outlook as they challenge historic league champions — the Wilkie Outlaws.

With two out of their five games a loss to the Outlaws, the Lions look to make their next game a tide-turner.

The Lions entered the League Finals earlier in the month after a nail-biting 3-2 series victory over the Macklin Mohawks. The next team then standing in the way of the Red Lions was the Wilkie Outlaws. The Outlaws stood at the top of their league since the 2017-18 season started, and managed to send the Lions sprawling on a couple of their regular season match-ups.

The first game of the finals series did not end well for the Lions as the Outlaws slashed out with a furry, beating the Lions 6-3 in front of the Lions’ home fans on March 11. Last Wednesday was game two for the series, and while the Lions put it out on the ice, a rouge score in overtime broke the game 3-2 in the Outlaws’ favour. “I was proud of the boys all the same,” Coach Wayne Sampson said in a recent interview. “The fought hard and executed their plays very well; just came up a little short in the end.”

This next game for the Lions will be another do-or-die situation for the team. The Wilkie Outlaws have been entrenched as league leaders for the last five years running, and show no signs of giving up that lead all season. However, the Red Lions haven’t been this close to the title since they took it back in 2012, so their motivation to tackle the next game head-on is very high.

The Lions and the Outlaws are negotiating the next game day for this week, details of the away game will be released once the decision is made.
