Remember to Drive Safely This Long Weekend

SGI Reminding Motorists To Travel Safely in Increased Traffic

The long weekend is here and for many of us that means hitting the road for a mini adventure. Long weekends mean increased traffic on the roadways and SGI is reminding motorists to travel safely this weekend.

According to SGI, each year in Saskatchewan, 15 people lose their lives and and 535 others are harmed in collisions over long weekends (5 year average).

Road safety is key in order to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

SGI provides some guidelines for a safe long weekend road trip:

  • Drive Sober and drug free – SGI reminds motorists to never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and also never let your friends or family drive while under the influence.
  • Avoid distractions – Make sure to give the road your full attention and keep your phone away from you. Have your passenger make the phone call or send the text.
  • Keep the speed limit – Follow the posted speed limits and drive for the conditions. Remember to slow down in construction or school zones.
  • Stay alert! – If you will be on the road for a long time make sure you are well rested  before traveling and take turns driving with a passenger (if they have a valid licence).
  • Always buckle up – Wear your seatbelt and ensure your passengers wear theirs as well. Make sure kids are in proper car seats for their age.
