Scholarship & Persistence Rewarded

Great Plains College – Kinderlsey, has awarded finances to students for their work and abilities.

Six recipients received their awards at a luncheon hosted on December 10, 2018 by the Great Plains College at the Kindersley Masonic Hall.

While numbers don’t tell everything, the Kindersley campus is giving financial assistance and scholarships to the tune of $5,100 – an aggressive amount compared to other campuses. Fritz Eckstein, regional manager for the Great Plains College – Kindersley/ Rosetown region, M.C.ed the luncheon and awards ceremony. Carrie Voysey, director of communications and development for Great Plains College, spoke on behalf of the Presi- dent of Great Plains College (Dr. David Keast), stressing how these awards help to alleviate financial stress on students. The Chair of the Board, Barb Derbawka-Stevenson, pointed to Nelson Mandela who claimed that education is the weapon to change the world.

Ceremonies included words from political and other educational personnel. Mayor Rod Perkins, on behalf of the town of Kindersley, encouraged students to consider staying in the area following their studies. Ken Francis, MLA, spoke of the commitment of the pro- vincial government to fund post secondary studies. Educational officers congratulated students and gave positive reports of the studies that they are undergoing. The College is thankful for community support – with the strong impact that donors provide to support students.

One of the awards was for ABE persistence – towards the completion of high school studies. These studies come some years after being away from the classroom. The ABE persis- tence award was application based. Students were asked to write about their own journeys, overcoming barriers to pursue education, in returning for studies towards high school completion.

In discussing this with the group of recipients, a recurring theme arose – bettering of them- selves, better jobs and the endurability of an education were mentioned. Some come with children, now looking for upgrading to lead towards better jobs and opportunities. Mention was made by some of the recipients that work in the food industry has become less desirable with the uncertain economic outlook of the region. Some want to head to nursing, some to social work and psychology. Another wants to take her place as an administrative assistants.

The ABA persistence awards were given to Christina Hussey (Barb Gray presenting on be- half of Kelly Insurance), Riki Strasza (Glenda Giles presenting on behalf of RM of Kinders- ley No. 290), Sherry Masse (Amanda Isberg presenting on behalf of Synergy Credit Union), and Marisa Medve (Rod Perkins presenting on behalf of Town of Kindersley).

Innovation and Opportunity Scholarships, based on merit, were presented to Kasandra Mackay (RM of Antelope Park No. 322 donor), and Kirsten Balzer (Village of Marengo). Again, the opportunity to seek out a higher level of employment and stability of work were attractive in joining the Administrative Assistant program at Great Plains College. Both students have enjoyed the challenge of numbers and bookkeeping.

Congratulations to all award recipients!
